"Whenever my brother, Ian and his family visit. One of the first things Ian always says is “Can we go to Shipley Glen, I want to check that it was real and not a dream” It has that affect on people. It is such a magical, enchanted place.
Back in the early 80’s, we used to regularly visit the glen with our three small boys. They loved walking through the woods from Gilstead and emerging at the back of The Glen Pub and tea rooms. We’d stop for an ice cream and they’d be bursting to get to the amusements. They were amazing. The aerial ride was their favourite, but the dodgems and slot machines were a close second.
Then on to the tramway. What a magnificent treasure. Smiley, willing helpers, wonderful sweets and the brilliant ride itself. It brings back such happy memories.
I still love it today, though sadly the fairground has gone, and return again and again with my grandchildren now!
